Mom Boss Monday (Andrea Merrill)Dec 21, 2020
This weekly blog post highlights women who are successfully running their online business while managing a household to #NormalizeTheShitShow that comes with the territory of “doing it all”.
These moms are going to share the messy side of running their biz & raising kids, what a typical day in the life looks like (does this even exist?!), how they deal with mom guilt and SO MUCH MORE!
You're getting a sneak peek into what their life looks like so you don't have to feel bad when you haven't bathed your kids in weeks & they have avocado in their hair as they lay in their crib (guilty 🙋🏼♀️).
This week we’re hanging out with Andrea Merrill of Virtually Adventurous.
Explain what you do & who you service in your business.
I have over 10 years of experience in branding and website design. I help passionate entrepreneurs and established businesses bring next-level success to their brand. I do this by helping them bring innovation and integrity through impactful, strategic, and high-converting websites to show off their expertise to attract their ideal clients.
How many kids do you have? What are their ages?
I have five kiddos - ages 12, 11, 9, 6, and 2.
What makes you unique as a mom & business owner?
I’m a motivator. I’m the pusher. I’m the cheerleader in your corner for your business. I don’t just want to see you succeed, I want to see you thrive. I want to see you persevere and feel confident in yourself!
By nature, we can be so hard on ourselves. Have grace with yourself. I build confidence through understanding and listening. You are not alone when we connect when we work together. I’m uplifting you like the boss babe you are!
I love empowering other mamas to know that they can do absolutely anything they set their mind to! I started my business building websites from my phone. If I can do it, so can you! I’m always willing to tell someone the hard truth with so much love, but I know we can do AMAZING things!
I use my background in psychology and help you design the business you have always wanted and deserve. I build websites that wow your clients. I do it with ease, simplicity, and with no pressure. We’re like family!
Most of all, I’m passionate, patient, and understanding of all things!
What's the hardest part of running your business and being a mom?
Time management! I was a stay at home mom for a long time. I didn't work until my kiddos were a bit older and I had to. So, I’m used to doing everything for them. Mom is always the go-to for everything. They will come to me first before they go to their dad.
I struggle with pushing off things on my husband and not doing everything for them. Pushing off the responsibilities has been a challenge. My husband has done a pretty good job taking on the responsibility. It was a struggle at first, but we're both finding the rhythm and so are the kiddos. I have to learn how to let go of some.
What is one "messy" thing about being a mom/biz owner that you would never share in public?
That I don’t have everything together. I want everyone to think I hold everything together, but there are days I cry because I can’t do everything.
I need help and asking for help is my downfall. My parents raised me to be independent and I have taken that very seriously. However, I don’t have it all together. My life is messy and crazy, and that’s ok!
What does a "typical" day look like for you (I know this doesn't exist but let's pretend).
We typically wake up around 8-8:30am and lay in bed until about 9:00am, unless we have something to do. Then, I come down to get the kids started on schoolwork. Sometimes I will work with the kids for an hour, unless I have something in my business I need to be doing right now.
Then, I will get to work. I write a list out every day, so I know what needs to get done. I've been trying to time block time during the day to work on my business because I was neglecting to work on my stuff.
I work on client work and have meetings around 10:00am-2:00pm. Then, I'll break for about an hour, unless I’m done with client work. If not, I go back from 3-4:00pm and finish up.
In the evenings, we will go four-wheeling/off-roading, then dinner. I’m working on a course. So, I've been taking a few days after dinner/family time where I will work on that. However, nights and weekends are typically spent with the family. I built my days so I could be with them.
Do you ever feel mom guilt?
Yes! Absolutely! How can you not!? Being a mom of five, I always have someone wanting mommy or yelling for me. I overcome it by being thankful I get to be at home with them. However, I know I have to work on my business to make our life better. I will take more breaks if I need to, take the day to go somewhere, or even take a trip.
My family is super supportive when it comes to my business. When I can’t help, we have made significant boundaries. For example, when my office door is shut, that means mommy can’t help right now. However, once it’s open, I can help. Setting boundaries has helped so much.
What's your favorite thing about being a mom/biz owner?
I get to spend my days doing what I love by the people who mean the most to me. I get to help my children do their school work, kiss my kids boo-boos, and I get to breastfeed my daughter. It’s the best feeling in the world. I get to create financial freedom for my amazing family.
What's ONE piece of advice would you give to other moms in the entrepreneurial space?
Keep moving forward. Some days will be more challenging than others, but it’s the good days that will push you to keep this going. I have had way more amazing days than bad. It’s our journey and we get to write the story! It’s so worth it.
The saying, “if you work and it doesn’t feel like you're working, you won’t work a day in your life” is so true! I feel like it’s been months, not years! You got this and be ok with pivoting. That’s where the real magic happens!
