Mom Boss Monday (Coleen Buckley)Nov 23, 2020
This weekly blog post highlights women who are successfully running their online business while managing a household to #NormalizeTheShitShow that comes with the territory of “doing it all”.
These moms are going to share the messy side of running their biz & raising kids, what a typical day in the life looks like (does this even exist?!), how they deal with mom guilt and SO MUCH MORE!
You're getting a sneak peek into what their life looks like so you don't have to feel bad when you haven't bathed your kids in weeks & they have avocado in their hair as they lay in their crib (guilty 🙋🏼♀️).
This week we’re hanging out with Coleen Buckley of Coleen Buckley Coaching.
Explain what you do & who you service in your business.
I'm an Instagram coach and manager! I help female business owners leverage their Instagram account to make sales with confidence and strategy so they can make more money and have more freedom. I coach business owners to do this themselves, or I take the reins and do it for them.
How many kids do you have? What are their ages?
One, almost 6 months old!
What makes you unique as a mom & business owner?
I just had my first child and am learning day by day how to juggle it all - the childcare, cooking, cleaning, marriage, running a business, social life, etc. Even with a supportive partner, it's a lot.
But my Instagram coaching and strategy allows people to do just that - juggle everything AND run a full time business with Instagram being the primary platform they do it from.
We often feel like there's no way we can possibly do it all. My unique perspective is the empowerment that YES we can (with a little help of course), because the time freedom and being with our family is worth it.
My coaching is centered around having the mindset to show up confidently on Instagram, even if you think you're boring (no such thing!) and using the power of YOU to sell.
What's the hardest part of running your business and being a mom?
For me, it has been the mom guilt. I feel a pang of guilt every time I put my baby in his jumper so I can sit in front of the computer. Or when I stick him in his bouncer so I can record a podcast. Or the worst - when I put a sensory video on YouTube so I can hop on a call.
I tell myself that it's of course so worth it to be making money to help support our family while also being home with him. I'm sure I might feel worse if I wasn't with him during the day at all, but I still spend the mornings working away and waiting for the minute I'm done so I can stop feeling like I've put him to the side.
What is one "messy" thing about being a mom/biz owner that you would never share in public?
The messy thing for me about being a mom/biz owner is doing things that I tell myself no other moms would do. Like I said above, I sometimes put my infant in front of a YouTube video. YOUTUBE.
It feels like I'm that parent I swore I wouldn't be, who uses screens to appease their child. And yet I do it because I still want to be successful and have something that's MINE - my business.
I'm like, is that horrible??
We spend so much time doing things for everyone else and to benefit everyone else, and my business is the one thing that's all mine and my responsibility. It feels "messy" that I sometimes want to put that first.
What does a "typical" day look like for you (I know this doesn't exist but let's pretend).
6:30-7:00am - Wake up
7:00-7:30am - First baby feeding
7:30-8:30am - Baby plays while I work
8:30-9:30am - Baby naps while I work
10:00am - Second baby feeding, repeat play & nap schedule
1:00pm - Third baby feeding, repeat play & nap schedule
4:00pm - Fourth baby feeding
5:00-5:45pm - Short nap (if not overtired/miserable during "fussy" hour)
6:30pm - Bath
6:45pm - Fifth and final baby feeding
7:00pm - Baby in bed, exercise (maybe), shower (maybe), make dinner and eat with husband, tidy up house, tv or sleep
Do you ever feel mom guilt?
Ah, yes....see answer above
What's your favorite thing about being a mom/biz owner?
My favorite thing about being a mom/biz owner is being home!! Even in the midst of the guilt for sometimes putting work first during the day, I love being there for all the special moments in these first few months of life.
What's ONE piece of advice would you give to other moms in the entrepreneurial space?
Make time for yourself, even if brief. We need it to stay sane, and we need to take care of ourselves in order to take care of others.
